Hundreds Gather to Advocate for Peace and Raise Their Voices against Genocide

This Saturday 28th October the streets of Burton on Trent witnessed a remarkable display of unity and compassion as approximately 500 people came together in support of the Children’s Solidarity Peace Walk. The event, which began at 2 pm at the War Memorial and concluded at the same location, drew people from all walks of life, including local businesses and passers-by who joined in to voice their support for the cause.

The event, organised to advocate for peace and raise awareness about the ongoing situation in Palestine struck a chord with the community. The participants, including individuals, families, and representatives from local businesses, carried banners and placards that conveyed their messages of solidarity with the people affected by the conflict.

Children were seen holding red balloons, inspired by world renowned artist Banksy’s iconic image of a ‘girl with balloon’ seen as a symbol of childhood, hope and freedom.

In a heart-warming display of empathy and solidarity, many participants took the time to connect and share words of support. Hugs and embraces were exchanged among strangers, as they expressed their deep concern for the innocent victims, particularly the children, who have become casualties of the ongoing oppression, with the support of the UK government.

What was especially notable during the event was the impressive level of organisation. Volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure that the march proceeded smoothly, and the speakers delivered powerful and moving speeches that resonated with the crowd. Children read out poems and short speeches authored by themselves that moved the hearts of the listeners.

A speaker at the event, Mohammed commented, “Peace begins with understanding and empathy, the walk was designed to empower young people to become advocates for peace in their communities and the world”.

Great care was taken to respect the War Memorial with voluntary security staff posted to protect this from any desecration, managing the crowds to ensure minimal disruptions to businesses and safety of all participants and bystanders throughout traffic areas.

PC Taylor who attended with his colleague, told of how in his 26 years of work he had never seen such a well organised event, all the way down to litter picking after the peace walk had concluded.

Despite constantly being told that protesting makes no difference, the people of Burton on Trent left with a sense of hope and determination, knowing that their voices had been heard and will at least reach the Palestinians and show them that the people of Burton stand by them, even if the UK government does not.

People of Burton expressed concern both online and in person about the lack of action from local leadership in promoting a just cause both for the constituents of Burton who have families in Gaza and for upholding what is considered ultimately the morally right thing to do.

A caption on the Facebook community page Burton On Trent Updates read “Local leaders/councillors/MP who were really vocal during the Ukrainian conflict have turned silent to the genocide and international war crimes”.

The Children’s Solidarity Peace Walk serves as a reminder that communities can come together to support a just cause and that peace, unity, and compassion can transcend boundaries and differences.
