Final Stand of the Moriscos and Captain Jack to the Rescue

The Moriscos Part 4

Even after 100 years after the conquest of Granada it was clear to the Spanish monarchy and the Catholic Church that the attempts to convert the Moriscos to Christianity were failing.

More and more continued to be caught in the middle of Islamic acts by the Inquisition and the punishment doled out did nothing to deter others.

In 1609, King Philip III heavily influenced by hardline Catholic priests decided to expel all the Moriscos left in Spain.

Entire villages were depopulated and their citizens being forced to the coast where ships from all over Europe waited to take them to North Africa.

Among the ships that came to the rescue, a particular pirate captain who was a scourge to England, Spain and others would rescue thousands upon thousands of Spanish Jews and Muslims.

He was Jack Ward also known famously as Jack Birdy (called this because he liked Sparrows) who became Yusuf Reis.

The very same person who Hollywood drew inspiration from in The Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Moriscos were allowed to take what they could carry with them but the would have their properties and children under the age of 4 taken from them to be raised as Christians.

Expulsion meant the Moriscos who had been masquerading as Christians has nothing to lose by coming out as Muslims and leading one final defence of the Islam in the peninsula.

For the 1st time in 100 years the Muslim call to prayer rang out in the valleys and hills of Spain.

Public communal prayer was once again convened.

The glory days of Islam in Spain were long gone, but the rebels despite being quickly defeated by the Spanish managed to revive the memory of Al Andalus and its 800 year history one last time.

By 1614, the Moriscos were all gone, Islam was forcibly removed from Spain.

There were reports that some Moriscos had managed to somehow stay in the country and continued practicing Islam in secret for centuries.

But as Islam fell in the Western outpost, it was just starting to be revived in the East.

The Ottomans were to reintroduce Islam to Europe and preside over a new Golden Age.
