Growing up I often saw my parents looking and sounding tired-exhausted infact.
So much so they barely had any energy to engage in a 5 minute chat.
As a child, I was oblivious to the daily sacrifices they went through and the amount of hardwork they put into making sure that me and my siblings were fed clothed and well looked after.
It is true that whilst I was grateful for my parents, I wouldn’t have been able to be specifically grateful for all their sacrifices.
Nor did I know how to show gratitude to them.
Not until I became a parent myself.
But why wait so long , when it is possible to teach our children how to be grateful so they can continue to improve and reflect as they themselves grow.
After all we are not only raising children, but people who may also become parents one day.
One of my favourite conversations to have with the kids is to talk about at least one thing we are grateful for about each other.
For instance I am grateful that my child shared his chocolate bar with me and this becomes an opportunity to show gratitude and let him know I noticed his kindness and appreciated what he did for me.
Some of the things he mentions include food I have cooked for him, taking them out to the park, cleaning the house, playing with them, telling a funny story etc.
It really is about the small things
And I find we always walk away from that conversation a little lighter and a lot brighter, Alhamdulillah (All praise is to God alone).
