Islam in East Africa

Islam was first introduced to Africa in the 7th century with the first migration of the companions of the noble Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. (Peace be upon him).

They fled the persecution of Mecca and arrived in modern day Ethiopia until their eventual return a few years later.

Muslim merchants began arriving for trade along the vast eastern border of Africa bringing both trade and Islam with them.

Some traders began to settle along the coast and the message of Islam began to spread further and further.

Africans felt a connection to Islam through the companion Bilal R.A and the first migration and began to embrace the word of Allah.

A new Islamic culture was born in Africa which was infused with the rich and unique local identity.
