TARIKH TUESDAY: Mansa Musa: The man who gave away 1.4 billion

Mansa Musa embarked on a more remarkable journey after Hajj. His aim was to build a powerful God-fearing society.

On his return journey Mansa recognised the need to purify the Islamic beliefs of his people from their old customs. He knew the only way to do so was by a more qualified Islamic scholarship.

He used his wealth and influence to bring back to Mali the greatest scholars, teachers and artists of the time.His vision was to create a learning centre rivaling that of or even better than Baghdad that had been destroyed 50 years earlier by the Mongols.

Arab, Persian and Andalusian scholars all flocked to Mali and became part of a new glorious chapter. The rise of Timbuktu…..

Mansa Musa was probably the richest man in history. He donated 24,000 kg of gold on his 5,000 mile journey to Hajj. This is the equivalent to $1.4 billion usd today!
